Environmental Design + Construction - March 2009 - (Page 8) NOTE “There’s more than one way to skin a cat!” My mom always told me “there’s more than one way to skin a cat*,” encouraging me to look at all of the options in any situation. With our current economy, we are re-evaluating every decision we make, personally and professionally. Personally, instead of carrying a photo album, I have the technology to easily upload photos of my new grandson, Luke. Instead of pulling out the hefty phone book, I search for restaurants online. Additionally, I save money, time and resources by sending e-cards instead of paper birthday cards. It’s the thought that really counts, right? Professionally, as publisher of ED+C, I regularly consider the best way to reach you, our reader. Print is conventional and comfortable, but in today’s economy, we’re obligated to look at the growing number of electronic alternatives. ED+C has many options for distributing information: the print magazine, which uses 100 percent recycled paper; a digital edition that looks exactly like the print issue but is e-mailed to your desktop; the monthly eNews, which is filled with tons of the latest news and dozens of Web links; www. EDCmag.com, which features trusted editorial content, exclusive articles, new products, the Green Book directory, RSS feeds, free webinars, breaking news and even shopping. With all of these options, what holds the most value? Which do you prefer? Maybe there’s more than one. This is a debate — often passionate — that I’ve had too many times to count. As the technology evolves to provide a better product, so does the debate. During this time of re-evaluating, how do you want to get your information? I’d love to hear what options you prefer and why. Your opinion will add to our ever-evolving discussion. Although I do enjoy reading in print, I’d prefer your comments via e-mail at Brownd@bnpmedia.com. All the Best, PUBLISHER’S GET INVOLVED! Support green building in your town. Consider networking with your local chamber of commerce, a membership in a local USGBC chapter or volunteering at a trade show to promote green initiatives. Because I try to practice what I preach, I currently serve on the City of Troy’s Sustainable Practices Committee and other green building organizations. We can continue to grow the green building industry even in the worst recession since the Great Depression. There is a green lining to this bad economy, so get involved!
