Engineered Systems - August 2008 - (Page 8) Editor’sNote BY ROBERT BEVERLY LOCAL Flavor Our host city takes sustainable strides with national implications. If you’ve been to Dallas before, you probably know that there’s some distance between DFW and downtown. However, as you look over the way the agenda has shaped up for our Green Sustainable Building Controls Conference & Expo, it becomes clear that a singular sense of purpose in intelligent buildings and has made the same journey from the terminals to the heart of the city. After our co-hosts, BACnet® International, deliver a solid slate of valuable info regarding the protocol on September 22, attendees begin two days of sessions that live up to the “practical” and “innovative” in our mission statement. More noteworthy is the way the two days are bookmarked by project successes from right there in the heart of Texas. Zaida Basora delivers the keynote to kick off Tuesday morning. Dallas’ city council has invested in the philosophy that greener strategies will improve not only the quality of life for residents, but also the economic viability of the city’s businesses. Basora, assistant director of Dallas Public Works & Transportation, will present on the first phase of this initiative, which tackles new construction of commercial buildings of all sizes. From there, we go to a new twist on our traditional programming: workshops. We’re keeping the flexible two-track approach (education on one side, government/health care/commercial on the other), and attendees can select their market sectors of interest. The workshops will look at some real intelligent building projects, examining how they are prepared to face the future as well as how they’re delivering on their original promises of efficiency. CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF Fast-forward to the last session, and we direct your attention to where many of you would be headed shortly thereafter: Dallas Fort-Worth International. Rusty Hodapp of DFW’s staff shares his experiences with the airport’s own extensive effort to incorporate building intelligence in those spaces. 8 En gi neer ed Sy stem s The challenges in adjusting an international airport are considerable, as you’d imagine, but it’s inspirational to see how an entity of that size can realize both immediate value from improving efficiencies and the satisfaction of boosting long-term sustainability. That’s a lot of general verbiage about success, but the thing is, there’s no need to rely on pie-in-the-sky predictions anymore. This stuff is working now, delivering real results to serious organizations. What we’ll do in Dallas is dig into details of how these people and companies are making it happen. In between those bookends, of course, we still offer those two tracks of sessions, featuring a couple dozen industry professionals. Emerging technologies, lighting control, and demand response / real-time pricing are just three of the topics in our whole-building approach. There, you’ll get a mix of updated info from returning presenters and new perspectives from firsttime participants. NETWORK RECEPTION Oh, and don’t forget the networking. Sometimes that can be as valuable as the organized content itself. Whether its at one of the networking receptions, or speaking to a presenter after a session, or chatting with colleagues during a break or after hours, it’s hard to tell where you’ll pick up that one idea or contact that makes the whole trip worthwhile on its own merits, but I bet you’ll pick it up along the way. That’s about as close to the hard-sell as I get, but having seen and heard the feedback from our past conferences — including the exceptional sense of purpose at last year’s BACnet-related event — I know that it can be a unique opportunity.
