Approximately 70% of HVAC systems are decentralized, and for this application, the HVAC system is a standard decentralized system installation. Scoring may differ based on project location, current costs, and local engineering experience. The analysis and selection of the optimum HVAC system for this application is ideally suited, based on simplicity of the gymnasium HVAC system, and first cost. Other benefits and features of an HVAC system such as life cycle, sustainability, etc., are frequently of less importance for many schools. This assessment can be part of optimizing energy performance when pursuing LEED® project certification, as well as other highperformance grant programs, but probably not a priority for a school district/town due to financial considerations on their part.
