Engineered Systems - January 2009 - (Page 12) Letters not describe how the interior space is conditioned. Since the building has 100% fenestration, there will certainly be times in Chicago when both heating and cooling are required simultaneously. It will not be possible to achieve (a) winter heating or (b) night setback at the perimeter without (1) changeover to warm water, and (2) operation of the air-handling system. If the air-handling system uses 100% outdoor air all year, operating night setback can be an expensive energy intensive process. In addition, and contrary to the claim by the author, there are no provisions in EPACT 2005 that apply requirements to this building. The author also says this 270,000-sq-ft building has 850 tons of cooling, or 318 sq ft/ton. That does not describe an energy efficient office building for Chicago. Finally, the author claims, “The system uses less energy than traditional systems …” but does not provide any metered data to support that claim. That metered energy data should have been provided in the article. Some just need help in understanding the system. Input 206 at www.esmagazine.com/instantproductinfo The article described the first Mestek. Although there may be earlier ™ systems, mine is state-of-the-art with today’s technology. Many decisions were made by the owner of 250 South Wacker regarding equipment. The existing 450-ton R-11 Carrier machine Air-to-Air Heat still operates and is reliable. The owner, however, decided that a new Exchangers with Ion chiller would be good to have due to energy, refrigerant, and backup desiccant for ventilation issues. So yes, the building does have “excessive” tonnage, but both air energy recovery. SG machines do not operate together. As far as meeting energy codes and heat exchangers transfer ventilation standards, the system exceeds all codes. both sensible and latent The purpose of the article was not to provide a detailed engineering energy from building analysis of codes, calculations, economic decisions, and analysis of engiexhaust air to pre-treat neering solutions outside of the chilled beam system. The building, in the ventilation air. This fact, has many other energy saving features not discussed by the article. reduces the outside air The article was intended to discuss chilled beams, what they are, how load on the building heating and cooling system. Less scientific research also shows that the average HVAC engineer feels much better after getting an observation, a compliment, or an old-fashioned gripe off one's chest.
