Engineered Systems - February 2009 - (Page 38) For a Truly “Green” System: A VFD for Energy Efficiency, An AEGIS Bearing Protection Ring for Sustainability T he new green movement incorporates two basic tenets: energy efficiency and sustainability. In order for a building, process, or product to be truly “green” it must achieve , both these goals. For equipment or systems powered by motors to be “green” however, often requires design engineers to deal , with bearing currents, an unwanted side effect of energy-efficient variable frequency drive (VFD) technology. Split-Ring Kits are ordered by motor frame size. Standard kits fit NEMA-frame motors with shaft diameters from 0.625" to 3.375" and IEC-frame motors with shaft diameters from 19mm to 95mm. The mounting plate covers less than ½" of the motor shaft. Custom-size kits are also available. For more information, contact: Electro Static Technology, TEL: 1-866-738-1857, www.est-aegis.com. VFDs Offer Impressive Energy Savings When used to control the speed of AC motors, VFDs offer energy savings of up to 30% or more. Considering the number of small motors used in buildings, the energy saving potential of VFDs is staggering! But VFDs are not without their drawbacks. VFDs induce unwanted currents on the shafts of the motors they control. Without an effective means of shaft grounding, these currents will discharge through bearings, causing fusion craters on bearing race walls. Over time, this can lead to noise, vibration, bearing failure, and premature, catastrophic motor failure. Obviously, such failures could more than wipe out any energy cost savings that a VFD generates and severely reduce the reliability of an entire system. Sustainable VFD Systems Require a Sustainable Shaft Grounding Technology VFD-Induced Bearing Currents Kill Motors! Save energy with a VFD, Save your motor with SGR BEARING PROTECTION RING Capable of saving 30% or more in energy costs, VFDs can help you create “green” systems, but without an AEGIS SGR™ to protect motor bearings, you will not have a sustainable truly green solution. The AEGIS SGR™ Bearing Protection Ring channels harmful VFD-induced shaft currents safely to ground, dramatically extending bearing and motor life and increasing system reliability. Unlike conventional grounding brushes, the SGR is maintenance-free and lasts for the life of the motor. It works with virtually no friction or wear and is unaffected by dirt, grease, or other contaminants. Because it comes in halves and its U-shaped mounting plate fits around the motor shaft, the SGR can be installed without disconnecting the motor from coupled equipment. Safely channels harmful currents away from bearings to ground Easy field or OEM installation — in just minutes Maintenance-free, contaminationproof, lasts for life of motor Standard sizes for any motor To download a free technical paper on bearing protection technologies, visit our website: Split mounting kit simplifies field installation on NEMA or IEC motors including those with shaft shoulders, slingers, or other end bell protrusions 1-866-738-1857 | sales @ est-aegis.com www.est-aegis.com/es2 Input 113 at www.esmagazine.com/instantproductinfo http://www.est-aegis.com http://www.est-aegis.com/es2 http://www.est-aegis.com/es2 http://www.esmagazine.com/instantproductinfo
