Engineered Systems - March 2009 - (Page 28) Application Checklist Educational Facility Dust Collection Exhaust and Makeup Air System The following system analysis and analytical scorecard can be used to assess the use of a wood shop’s dust collector system interlocked to the space makeup air system. The approach is based in part on the 2008 ASHRAE Handbook — HVAC Systems and Equipment, Chapter 1, “System Analysis and Selection Process” and the 2007 ASHRAE Handbook — Applications, Chapter 6, “Educational Facilities.” In addition, our scoring is based on our own design, construction, commissioning, TAB, and building management experience. Scoring may differ based on project location, current costs, and local engineering experience. The design intent of the dust collector exhaust (DCE-1) and associated makeup air terminal (VAVRH-1) is to provide industrial exhaust of the woodcutting machines while maintaining space comfort during the heating season and the A/C season. This month’s “Back2Basics” focuses on the building/energy management portion of the system application while the “HVACR Designer Tips” focuses on project closeout. The analysis and selection of the optimum DCE-VAVRH system for a specific project can be determined through available industrial exhaust system applications and methods. This assessment should be part of optimizing energy performance when pursuing LEED® project certification, as well as other high performance grant programs.
