International Appliance Manufacturing 2007 - (Page 17) thin-sheet steel that is coated with a decorative metallised foil using the coil coating process. This decorative metallised foil was developed together with a partner of the Color Profit Center and gives the steel the metallic look of higher class and/or higher priced materials such as aluminum, copper, stainless steel or titanium (see figure 1). Right from the start of development, great emphasis was placed on ECOLOGY, QUALITY, AESTHETICS and ECONOMY . The demand for chromate-free products for the domestic appliance industry (e.g. in order to comply with ROHS) made it clear in the past that coil coaters and domestic appliance manufacturers could not lose sight of the e c o l o g i c a l a s p e c t . The Market and Innovation Team faced up to this responsibility right from an early stage of product development. As a result, there was no question of using composite foils containing halogen and PVC contaminants. PLADUR® M, the sustained halogen and PVC-free innovation, offers customers a product with a longlasting appeal that can be used for an extremely wide range of applications. It goes without saying that the aspect of p r o d u c t q u a l i t y also featured heavily during development of the product. The team succeeded in achieving a mutually compatible system comprising easily formed hot-dip finished steel strip (e.g. GALFAN®), glue and decorative foil such that commonly used processing methods such as deepdrawing, folding, rollforming or stamping are possible with PLADUR®M (with or without protective foil). Excellent “easy-toclean” properties such as resistance to mustard, red wine, etc. and the simplicity with which finger marks can be removed are only two of the many aspects that offer added value for the end user. PLADUR® M offers a whole host of a e s t h e t i c v a r i a t i o n s (see figure 2). In addition to the ability to produce various metal looks, it is also possible to achieve different levels of sheen (i.e. gloss or matt looks) as well as brushed and non-brushed surfaces. In addition, there are dyed, translucent variants allowing the processor to give its products a combination of high-quality and characteristic appearances with a high level of recognition – and all this at a comparably low cost . Various design variants such as the “bright steel finish”, “titanium finish”, “aluminum finish”, etc. are currently available. Given sufficient demand, however, customers will also be able to choose individually how their high-quality semifinished products should look. Abstract It has been shown that customers’ wishes for first-class products with metal looks have been correctly identified in the development of PLADUR® M. PLADUR® M offers advantages not only in terms of ecological, quality and aesthetic aspects but also provides domestic appliance manufacturers and end users alike with various benefits. An appropriate purchase price, moderate delivery times, good processing capabilities, individual configuration options and outstanding cleaning properties have already proven their worth in the market. For use in interior applications, PLADUR® M therefore offers users additional possibilities for achieving an individual product design.
