The Kumeyaay Way - Winter 2008 - (Page 5) editor Alan L. Barrett, Tribal Councilmember Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians assistant editors Also in this issue, contributing writer Maya Dollarhide paints a vivid picture of how something as small and seemingly simple as an acorn has had a huge impact on the very survival of the Kumeyaay People. It’s a wonderful story based on an interview with Viejas Tribal Councilwoman Virginia Christman. And another contributing writer, Diana Saenger of Alpine, California, tells the story of how a golden eagle, a sacred symbol to Native Americans all across the country, was rescued from certain death on the Viejas Reservation. The eagle owes its life to tribal member Cameron Welch, doctors at a local animal hospital and Project Wildlife, a southern California wildlife rehabilitation center. This majestic bird is not quite out of the woods yet, but we’re hoping to have a positive update on this compelling story in our next issue. And finally, take a look at “Remember When” on page 23. Viejas Tribal Member Oletha Leo stumbled upon a great story when she just happened to cross paths with 80-year-old Donald Wooldridge, who grew up living next to the Viejas Reservation. Oletha sat down with Mr. Wooldridge recently and asked him to share his recollection of what it was like for a non-Native to grow up next to the Reservation…playing and working with tribal members. We hope you find these stories and others contained within the pages of this publication interesting, insightful and inspiring. I welcome your input and we look forward to bringing you future issues of The Kumeyaay Way magazine. Enjoy!
