Mission Critical - Winter 2008 - (Page 74) News vice president and chief technology officer, Hitachi Data Systems, will discuss how Sustainable Data Storage Is More Than Green Technology on the following day. Manos will appear again on the final day of Data Center World in a green data center panel discussion. ■ Information Transport Solutions (ITS) corporation, has been elected president of BICSI. Donelan has completed a leadership role as president-elect for two years and was inaugurated at the winter conference in Orlando on January 15th, 2008, for an additional 2-year term as president. BICSI, a worldwide organization founded in 1974, boasts over 17,000 members in more than 100 countries. ■ Seven Industry Leaders Join Mission Critical Board Kevin Dickens, PE, LEED AP and deputy director, Mechanical Engineering at Jacobs joined Mission Critical’s editorial advisory board on January 30th, bringing to seven the number of new members announced in January. Previously, Rob Aldrich, senior manager and principal, Cisco Energy Efficient Data Center Solutions had been the most recent addition. Kevin Heslin, editor, Mission Critical, said, “I’m delighted to have such a strong editorial board, and expect great synergies because the members represent many corners of the industry. What they have in common is great experience and lots of dedication to the industry.” Earlier in January, Heslin released the names of five new board members: • Christian Belady, Microsoft • Scott Good, Turner Construction • John Musilli, Intel Corp • Dean Nelson, Sun • Glen Neville, Deutsche Bank “Mission Critical seeks to offer the most complete and accurate coverage of data center and emergency back up solutions. The editorial advisory board is one important tool that we use to reach these goals,” said Publisher Peter Moran. ■ ARI Releases New Study, Conducts Followup Aperture Research Institute (ARI) is now conducting a survey focused on green initiatives and real-time monitoring in the data center, as well as a look back at some hot topics that were included in past surveys. According to Andrew Fanara, product development for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “The Government is directly examining data centers as a key factor in carbon emissions.” The ARI seeks to determine the level of awareness and action around these issues. The survey takes only about 10 minutes and can be completed by visiting the ARI’s website. ARI has also published a research note based on the last survey conducted: ITIL is Gaining Momentum but the Data Center is Slow to Adopt. ■ New Data Center to be Based In Cheyenne The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) announced that it would develop a new supercomputing facility in Cheyenne, WY, with construction expected to be complete in 2010. NCAR is building the center in partnership with the University of Wyoming, the State of Wyoming, the Cheyenne–Laramie County Corporation for Economic Development, the Wyoming Business Council, and CU-Boulder. The new center will be the first NCAR facility to earn LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for its design, construction, and operation. Measuring 108,000 square feet in total with 15,000-20,000 square feet of raised floor, it will be built for 8 megawatts of power, with 4-5 megawatts for computing and 3-4 for cooling. ■ Mission Critical Develops New Webinars Mission Critical finalized details of three important webinars with speakers drawn from across the data center community. Industry sponsors include Eaton, APC-MGE, and Degree Controls. Registration is already open for these free webinars at the Mission Critical website (www.missioncriticalmagazine.com). The first of these events is scheduled to take place March 18th and features Ken Brill of The Uptime Institute and John Tuccillo, director of The Green Grid. The topic of this webinar is Exploring Private Sector Initiatives That Will Change How You Run Your Data Center. More information is available on p. 39. March 25, 2008, is the date scheduled for Room Scale Intelligent Cooling-- Solutions Beyond CFD. Coy Stine and Wally Phelps bring perspective to cooling issues in the data center. More information is available on p. 47. Everything You Need to Know about Cooling Data Centers takes place May 22. This special 90-minute sessions features contributions from Bruce Myatt, EYPMCF; Mike Schwarz and Tom Reed, KlingStubbins; and James Coe and Vali Sorell, SyskaHennessy. More information is available on p. 55. ■ SUNY-ESF Fuel Cell System Gets Positive Report from EPA DANBURY, CT — FuelCell Energy released an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report showing positive operating results for one of the company’s Direct FuelCell (DFC) units. The power plant is installed at the State University of NY, College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) in Syracuse, New York. As part of its Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) program, the EPA conducted tests on SUNY-ESF’s DFC300 250 kilowatt (kW) stationary fuel cell power plant. Test results showed that the DFC unit operated at 48.4 percent electrical efficiency while maintaining a 99.9 percent power availability rating throughout the seven-day test period. The report also verified that waste heat recovered from the fuel cell system, used to augment building heat for a nearby dormitory complex, produced an average of .304 million Btu per hour (MBtu/h). The report lists the Combined Heat and Power (CHP) efficiency of the system at 65.7%.
