Scheduled to accommodate teachers from around the state, the day-long interactive workshop was offered at Moore Norman Technology Center, Norman, Okla., and again recently at Tulsa Technology Center, Tulsa. “The seminar is a response to reports of a growing shortage of skilled service professionals in the areas of engineering, production, distribution, and heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration service,” said David Negrey, Johnson ControlsUnitary Products’ director, technical services, and applications engineer. “We designed the workshop to equip teachers with the tools they need to excite and engage their students in a science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)-based curriculum and to demonstrate the M David Negrey, Johnson Controls-Unitary Products’ director, technical services and applications engineer, addresses a group of science teachers during an “Energy at Work” seminar. Topics included the structure of matter, kinetic molecular theory, temperature, thermal expansion, heat transfer method, and phase changes. Teachers also participated in a number of interactive demonstrations, releasing hidden heat that exists in all liquids, igniting cotton fibers with compressed air, and making liquid rise from the heat of their hands. In addition, they met with business and industry leaders over lunch to gain perspective on HVACR industry challenges, career opportunities, and successes. Workshop attendees left the session with a teacher manual, three instructional DVDs, and a reproducible student booklet. “We were thrilled with the turnout for this first workshop,” said Negrey. “Our goal was to strengthen the relationship between the HVACR industry and education. Based on the positive feedback we received, I think we accomplished what we set out to do.” ■ Dr. Stanley to be Keynote Speaker r. Patricia Stanley, deputy assistant secretary in the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Vocational and Adult Education, will be the keynote speaker at the 2008 HVACR & Plumbing Instructor Workshop on March 6. The workshop is set for March 5-7 at the National Conference Center in Lansdowne, Va. Gerry Kennedy, chair of the 2008 Instructor Workshop Steering Committee, said having Stanley kick off the workshop is “indicative of the commitment we have to providing our attendees access to the highest caliber of industry professional.” “Pat Stanley is a leader in the field of vocational and adult education and her expertise and professional experiences are tailor-made for our audience,” said Kennedy. “Dr. Stanley has set a standard of excellence in her career and we look forward to hearing her commentary on the state of American adult education and the future challenges.” Sworn in as the deputy assistant secretary in the Office of Vocational and Adult Education in mid-December 2006, Stanley was selected for her knowledge of community colleges and experience with workforce and adult education. Her primary responsibilities are for all initiatives and policies affecting community colleges and post-secondary education. D DuPont to Address Changes T NATE, PAHRA, AHRI, AND UA ENTER EDUCATION AGREEMENT: During this year’s Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating Expo in New York City, a memorandum of understanding was signed among North American Technician Excellence (NATE); Partnership for Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigeration Accreditation (PAHRA); the Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI); and the United Association (UA) which will give students advanced status in the UA when they graduate from schools accredited by PAHRA and that use ICE and NATE exams. Having his turn at signing the documents is Rex Boynton, president of NATE. Waiting in the back row are (from left) Steve Allen of UA-Education; Steve Yurek, president of AHRI, Pat Murphy, president of PAHRA, and Mike Arndt, director of training for UA. ■ 62 he phaseout for R-22 is picking up speed, and supply may be dramatically reduced by Jan. 1, 2010. In evaluating the options for R-22, DuPont Isceon Refrigerants wants to assist HVACR instructors. Nick Strickland, market development manager for DuPont Refrigerants, will be discussing the planning needed for changes in refrigeration during the HVAC Excellence National HVAC Educators and Trainers Conference. Strickland is scheduled to speak on March 18, upon completion of Cindy Newberg’s presentation. Newberg is the lead analyst for domestic implementation of the HCFC phaseout at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The National HVACR Educators and Trainers Conference will be held March 16-19 at the Imperial Palace Hotel in Las Vegas. This year’s conference includes high-profile speakers from DuPont, EPA, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), Johnson Controls, Goodman Manufacturing, and Toshiba Motors.
