Luvata Announces it has Acquired ECO SpA EW YORK — At the 2008 Air Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating Exposition, Luvata noted that it had signed an agreement to acquire ECO SpA. Luvata supplies fabricated metal solutions, services, and components to manufacturers and the construction industry. ECO makes heat transfer coils and coolers. According to Luvata, the acquisition represents “a strategic opportunity to strengthen its product offers in value-added solutions” in HVACR. “The ECO Group has a strong, established position in Europe, complementing Luvata’s position in North America,” it was reported. The release also noted that Luvata “emerged when Outokumpu Copper Products was acquired by Nordic Capital in 2005.” ■ N Rehau Begins Contractor Program EW YORK — Rehau launched a professional contractor development program for the North American market. According to the company, the Rehau EdgeSM is structured to encourage all aspects of contractor growth through training; design services; company branding; and local, regional, and national events. The program is designed for both commercial and residential contractors. “Essentially, what takes place at a Rehau Academy or Skill Builders training event is a three-day training that focuses on how to install radiant piping systems, how to design radiant piping systems, and a good understanding of PEX pipe and all of the related program accessories that go with it,” said Michael Dietrich, heating business team manager. “Branding for us means that the contractor can brand his company and also brand Rehau. The contractor positions himself as a premium player in his market. He becomes the local expert.” The design service includes software and support for designing heating and plumbing systems. Dietrich described the events portion of the program as “facilitating networking and building relationships through the whole distribution channel partner chain — Rehau, the contractor, our manufacturer reps, and our distributors. … You get that whole team in one room, which is unique. The contractor can see the complete support network behind them.” N Private Sector Needs to Create a 21st Century, EnergyEfficient Built Environment.” This event coincides with the Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute’s annual meeting. It will address how energy-efficiency technology “is creating novel possibilities — and positive return on investment — in the built environment,” said Danfoss in a statement. They will be the seventh and eighth in the EnVisioneering series which is entering its third year. In addition to the two “macroevents”, Danfoss also said it will add a series of regional micro symposia to the 2008 series. “Danfoss is taking the program to an even higher level, with a series of micro symposia designed to give stakeholders unique ideas and solutions to address energy-efficiency challenges to their terms,” said John Galyen, president of Danfoss Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, North America. Carrier Signs Onto Clinton Climate Initiative EW YORK — Carrier Corp. announced during the Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigerating Exposition that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) to provide its energy-efficient, non-ozone-depleting, water-cooled chillers to qualified C40 cities and private building owners in the C40. Carrier, a unit of United Technologies Corp., is the first HVAC company to sign an MOU with the CCI for energy-efficient products. The CCI is a project of the William J. Clinton Foundation. The C40 is an association of large U.S. and international cities that have committed to tackling climate change and have pledged to accelerate their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and serve as models for other cities. The MOU results in discounts on these products to C40 cities and other CCI partners, thereby improving the payback on chiller replacements. The MOU is aligned with the CCI Energy Efficiency Building Retrofit Program, launched May 2007, that provides cities and private building owners with access to financing terms to retrofit existing buildings with more energy-efficient systems. “Both Carrier and CCI recognize that it is imperative to accelerate the adoption of new, affordable, energy-saving technologies in the C40 cities which comprise nearly half of the global population, consume 75 percent of the world’s energy, and produce nearly 80 percent of its greenhouse gas emissions,” said Kelly Romano, president, Building Systems and Services (BSS), Carrier Corp. ONLINE AT WWW.ACHRNEWS.COM ■ Dupont and Honeywell Release New Refrigerant EW YORK — As part of its press conference at the 2008 International Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating Exposition, DuPont Refrigerants announced that it and Honeywell have jointly come up with a new refrigerant for mobile air conditioning designed to address concerns about the perceived high global warming potential of HFC-134a. The refrigerant was identified as HFO-1234yf, meaning it is not an HFC. DuPont officials said the refrigerant is a single component and not a blend. “We are very encouraged that it will be compatible with existing 134a mobile air conditioning system technology,” DuPont said. It is being developed because the European mobile industry has been mandated to move from the use of R-134a in air conditioning starting with 2011 model automobiles. The product is being introduced at a time in which attention is also being paid to using R-744 (CO2 ) in automobile air conditioning. During the press briefing at the expo, DuPont officials said the refrigerant’s acceptance and performance in mobile a/c will be monitored so that consideration might be given to HFO-1234yf’s use in the stationary sector, particularly for the types of equipment that currently use R-134a. The new refrigerant was formally presented in fall 2007 at the second European Workshop on Mobile Air Conditioning and Auxiliaries in Torino, Italy.
