Ask the Expert Steven Chan Research Associate M ERGERS & ACQUISITIONS MÜNZING Acquires Hexion's Liquid Defoamer Business HEILBRONN, GERMANY — In line with its growth strategy, MÜNZING has acquired the liquid defoamer business from Hexion Speciality Chemicals B.V. The business will be integrated into MÜNZING’s existing Paper and Coatings Additives business. The acquisition strengthens MÜNZING’s position in the architectural and industrial coatings segments as well as in adhesives. The transaction includes the transfer of Hexion’s complete liquid defoamer line and all customer relationships. The production of the defoamer line will be integrated into MÜNZING’s additive plant in Heilbronn, Germany, in April 2008. Q A Why is having a low MFFT important for my coating formulation? MFFT, or minimum ﬁlm formation temperature, is the lowest temperature at which a coating will form a continuous ﬁlm without cracking or losing ﬁlm properties. It is important for aesthetics and for non-ideal application conditions, such as low temperatures, because it extends the painting season. Reduction of MFFT can be accomplished in a number of ways: reducing Tg, which yields a softer coating that has poorer resistance and scrubbing properties; adding a coalescing solvent, which increases the VOC content of the formulation; or utilizing a coalescing surfactant like Air Products’ EnviroGem®360 surfactant. Unlike the other alternatives, EnviroGem 360 lowers the MFFT of a system without detracting from ﬁlm properties while also providing outstanding defect-free foam control and excellent wetting. It also helps the formulator create coatings that meet stringent environmental and VOC requirements. Malvern Acquires Viscotek Corp. MALVERN, UK — Malvern Instruments has acquired Viscotek Corp., a provider of chromatography solutions for the characterization of natural and synthetic polymers and proteins. The acquisition of Viscotek brings new and complementary technologies and expertise into Malvern, adding gel permeation chromatography, flow injection polymer analysis and dilute solution viscosity, as well as extending the range of characterization solutions offered. of the fastest-growing regions in the automotive industry,” said Richard J. Rohm and Haas to Acquire Polymer Dispersions Division of OY Forcit AB PHILADELPHIA — Rohm and Haas Co. has signed an agreement to acquire the FINNDISP division of OY Forcit AB, a Finnish paint emulsions operation, for approximately €60 million. Based in Hanko, Finland, this division of Forcit makes water-based emulsions used in the manufacture of paints and coatings, lacquers, and adhesives in Northern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (former Soviet Union). Rohm and Haas expects to complete the transaction by the end of the first quarter of 2008. PPG Industries and Kansai Paint Expand European Alliance PITTSBURGH — PPG Industries and Kansai Paint have expanded their alliance, known as PPG Kansai Automotive Finishes (PKAF), to include the sale of automotive coatings to Japaneseowned or operated original-equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in Hungary. The business was transferred from a previous venture between Akzo Nobel and Kansai Paint. “Global OEMs are continuing to add capacity in Eastern Europe, as it is one DSM Acquires Soluol HEERLEN, the Netherlands — Royal DSM N.V. has announced the acquisition of the U.S.-based company Soluol, a developer, producer and marketer of high-performance urethane resins. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. The acquisition of Soluol enhances DSM’s specialty-resins presence in North America and adds new technology as well as a production facility in Rhode Island.
