Declining issues easily surpassed advancing issues at a 26-to-8 clip. Despite reporting a drop in its third-quarter income, shares of OM Group rose 4.73 points, or 8.96 percent, to close at 57.54. OM Group announced net income of $38.1 million, or $1.26 per share, down from $88 million, or $2.97 per share earned in last year’s third quarter. The results were above analysts’ expectations of $1.15 per share, as reported by Thomson Financial. OM Group cited loss of income from its discontinued nickel division. OM Group was the top dollar and percentage gainer in the index this quarter. Ashland fell this session after the company reported an 84-percent slide in its fiscal fourth quarter net income, and failed to meet analysts’ earnings expectations for the quarter. Ashland said it earned $32 million, or $0.51 per share, versus earnings of $200 million, or $2.82 per share, in the comparable quarter a year ago. Ashland said the results were due to weakness in the North American construction market, and to the benefits of the sale of its APAC subsidiary reported last year. Revenue for this quarter was ahead 9 percent, to $2.1 billion, from $1.93 billion a year ago. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial expected earnings of $0.72 per share, with revenues of $1.95 billion. Ashland was down 12.78 points, or 21.33 percent, and was the top dollar loser. Ashland ended at 47.43. Arch Chemicals faltered this quarter after the company turned to a loss in its third quarter. Arch lost $12.6 million, or $0.51 per share, compared to earnings of $7.3 million, or $0.30 per share, in last year’s third quarter. Arch Chemicals said the loss was due to the sale of certain divisions, and to an increase in compensation costs. Sales were up to $376.5 million; however, analysts were expecting sales of $380.4 million. Arch shed 10.13 points, or 21.61 percent, and closed at 36.75. Celanese was up 3.34 points, or 8.57 percent this session after the company upped its full-year outlook, citing a positive outcome for restructuring initiatives and an upswing in its acetyl divisions. Acetyl products comprise almost half of the company’s net sales. Celanese now says it expects to earn between $3.26 per share and $3.31 per share. Earlier estimates put its 2007 earnings at $3.10 and $3.20 per share. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial were assessing earnings at $3.21 for the year. Celanese closed at 42.32.
