C O M PA NY NEWS Brookfield Sales Engineer Awarded U.S. Patent MIDDLEBORO, MA — Brookfield Sales Engineer and Rheology Lab Supervisor, David Moonay, has been awarded a U.S. patent for an algorithm he developed that provides “multi-decade viscometric or rheologic measurements of a material undergoing state change.” According to Moonay, “This algorithm allows us to use Brookfield instruments to collect data on products that gel or cure over a much wider range of viscosity than ever before.” Moonay developed the solution after talking with customers who complained that their gel timers couldn’t get the viscosity data they needed. Now, Brookfield customers can monitor gelling over a wide viscosity range at a reasonable price. The Cure Mode Test is included in Brookfield Rheocalc Software (version 3.0 and above) and can run on DV-II+Pro Viscometers, DV-III+ and DV-III Ultra Rheometers. PPG Launches “Green” Zircobond Pretreatment TROY, MI — PPG Industries has announced the launch of a new, environmentally responsible automotive pretreatment technology at CAMI Automotive’s production facility in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. CAMI, an independently incorporated joint venture of Suzuki Motor Corp. and General Motors of Canada Ltd., began processing vehicles with Zircobond pretreatment in early January and moved to full-scale production on January 14. The commercial launch of Zircobond pretreatment is a significant step for PPG, CAMI and an automotive industry striving to be more “green.” According to GM Global Process Pretreatment Lead Kevin Cunningham, “Continued leadership in the use of environmentally friendly technologies is imperative at General Motors. PPG has developed an innovative pretreatment coating material that offers advantages including energy savings, water conservation and a smaller footprint. Cardolite Corp. Expands Capacity in China NEWARK, NJ — Cardolite Corp., a producer of cashew liquid technology, has announced two capacity expansions at its China facility; it is doubling capacity for cashew nutshell (CNSL) liquid distillation, and it is installing two epoxy curing agent/diluent reactors. The distillation expansion has been online for several months, and the reactor capacity is expected for trials in early April 2008. This is the first major expansion for Cardolite’s China facility, which is located in Zhuhai’s Harbor Industrial Zone and began official production in 2005. DuPont Licenses Automotive Coatings Technology to German Company WILMINGTON, DE — Bollig & Kemper, a German manufacturer of coatings for the European auto industry, has signed a license agreement for DuPont EcoConcept, a patented coatings technology that enables auto manufacturers to realize substantial reductions in energy use, environmental emissions and capital costs. Under the license agreement, the Cologne-based paint maker will manufacture and sell water-based basecoats for use in the EcoConcept process at automotive manufacturing plants in Germany and elsewhere in Europe. EcoConcept eliminates one complete coating layer, the primer surfacer, and combines it into a single environmentally compliant water-based basecoat. As a result, a spray booth and curing oven are eliminated from the auto production line. APS and CAT Form Joint Venture PEABODY, MA/MENTOR, OH — Adhesive Packaging Specialties Inc. (APS) and Cartridge Application Technologies (CAT), a newly formed division of V.O. Baker Co., have signed a three-year agreement. The joint venture between the two companies was formed to address the increased demand for the Dual Cartridge, a system that provides the delivery of two-component reactive materials.
