C O M PA NY NEWS Dow Exploring Divestiture Options MIDLAND, MI – The Dow Chemical Co. (Dow) is exploring divestiture options for its Clear Lake Operations acrylic acid and esters and UCAR Emulsion Systems specialty latex business in North America. The exploration of strategic options for the business is driven by Dow’s interest in proactively mitigating potential antitrust issues associated with its previously announced acquisition of Rohm and Haas. The business includes an acrylic acid and esters production plant located in Clear Lake, TX, and UCAR Emulsion System specialty latex product plants located in Louisiana (St. Charles), Illinois (Alsip), California (Torrance) and a commercial and technical center in Cary, NC. Dow Izolan Breaks Ground on New Facility in Russia VLADIMIR, Russia – Dow Izolan, the joint-venture company between the Dow Chemical Co. (Dow) and Izolan, has broken ground on a polyurethane-systems manufacturing facility in Vladimir, Russia. The new plant will help Dow Izolan enhance its offering to Russian customers serving the fast-growing automotive, consumer, footwear, furniture, appliance and construction markets. The facility is scheduled for startup in mid-2009. The facility will produce a broad range of polyurethane systems, from rigid foam systems used in construction panels and insulation to flexible foam systems used for arm rests, head rests and seating in automotive applications. Pilot Chemical Achieves CleanGredients® Listing CINCINNATI – Pilot Chemical Co. has achieved the listing of eight surfactant products with CleanGredients®, an online database showcasing independently verified information concerning the human health and environmental attributes of surfactants used in cleaning products. NSF International provided the third-party certification and environmental screening using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s DfE (Design for the Environment) program, which designates surfactants with especially positive environmental characteristics. will also be reorganized to offer a single face to customers. The company’s automotive OEM coatings business will also close its Clarkson, Ontario, Canada, coatings manufacturing facility sometime in mid-2009. PPG will make investments in other existing facilities to continue supporting its North American business and to accommodate increased production volume resulting from the Clarkson closure. The business also plans to eliminate various positions throughout North America, due to significantly lower demand in the marketplace. Dunn-Edwards to Build Coatings Technology Center LOS ANGELES – Dunn-Edwards Corp. plans to build a 40,000-square-foot coatings technology center on its Los Angeles campus. The new facility will consolidate the paint manufacturer’s existing research, product development and quality assurance laboratories in one location. The center will be known as the Ken Edwards Coatings Technology Center. It will house a 75-seat lecture hall to accommodate educational presentations and host industry and regulatory workshops. Dunn-Edwards has been reorganizing its laboratories to center around three teams: research, product development and quality assurance. PPG Restructures Business Units TROY, MI/ROLLE, Switzerland – PPG Industries has announced plans to restructure two of its business units, closing facilities in the Netherlands and Canada. The company’s protective and marine coatings business has proposed the closure of its Geldermalsen, the Netherlands, coatings manufacturing facility sometime in 2009. Production will be consolidated with facilities in Amsterdam and DeurneBorgerhout, Belgium. Sales forces Univar Announces Two Distribution Agreements WESTON, Canada – Eastman Chemical Co. has appointed Univar Canada Ltd. as its exclusive distributor for its domestic and imported LTL hydrocarbon resin business. Additionally, the Dow Chemical Co. has appointed Univar Specialties, a division of Univar Canada Ltd., as an authorized distributor in Canada for its polyurethane (polyols and MDI) product line. 24 NOVEMBER 2008 | W W W .
