Pollution Engineering - September 2008 - (Page 26) With massive With a massive rainstorm, the likes of which had not been seen for half a millennium, threatening to flood America’s heartland, government workers and water equipment companies sprang into action, getting the right tools to where they needed. Shortly after floods ripped through the Upper Mississippi River Basin, Rain for Rent sent out a press release giving a short account of that company’s participation in the emergency flood relief efforts. That release was subsequently published by several electronic outlets. This article is that same account, expanded in detail by the company exclusively for the readers of Pollution Engineering. D uring the spring of 2008, severe weather in the Midwest developed into a 500-year rain event. The unrelenting rainfall caused record flooding, and filled the Mississippi River to its brink. Over 40,000 people had to evacuate the flood-affected region as this catastrophic situation threatened homes, farmland, businesses and public infrastructure. Amidst the torrential downpour, officials from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the National Guard, and other local, state and federal agencies struggled to roll out an emergency response plan. Needing equipment fast, the Corps contacted a Midwest regional office of Rain for Rent. The company, founded in Bakersfield, Calif., in 1934, was ready for the call. Prompt action saves the day Within hours, representatives from the company’s St. Louis office met with Corps leaders and 1,500 National Guard troops at the Guard’s depot in Quincy, Ill., and delivered 25 of its Power Prime pumps in 4-, 6- and 26 Pollution Engineering SEPTEMBER2008
