READERCOMMENTS Carbon Footprints am appalled by your editorial statement, “Most carbon emissions come from fossil fuel used to supply energy to a thirsty world.” Would you please provide valid support documentation for the statement? After reading on this topic from many sources, I have concluded that fossil fuel consumption is responsible for less than 5 percent of the total CO2 emissions. It doesn’t take a math genius to conclude that a 50 percent reduction of 5 percent amounts to 2.5 percent, which is insignificant to atmospheric warming. The measurements and models are not nearly that precise. In fact we are quite ignorant of the significance of the dissolved carbonate system in ocean waters. I am ashamed of my fellow engineers who are rubbing their hands in glee with the prediction of stricter environmental regulations in hope of increased billing. There is nothing wrong with making a profit, but not at the EXPENSE of our clients. What happened to the reality that without CO2 there will not be any plant life and without plants there will not be any O2 for us to breath. ENERGY CARBON Do you agree that this carbon issue is nearly a non issue if we would decide to build our next 50 to 80 nuclear plants at the rate of about one a month? Let’s agree on a best design then demand that they be all alike. The cost would be very low compared to today’s mess. There is no reason to continue our present nonsense of building every one very different and taking 12 to 15 years to build each one and accep accepting the cost overruns g that go into the BILL BILLIONS ever time time.
