M Their final decision is due soon. The EPA in August opened a 30-day public comment nt period on its recommendations for areas to be designated as out of compliance with the agency’s 24-hour fine particle standards. On Aug. 19 and 20, the agency notified states and tribes of its recommendations for areas to be designated as “attainment” or “nonattainment” for fine particle pollution, also called PM 2.5. Exposure to fine particle pollution is linked to a variety of serious health problems, including aggravated ted asthma, chronic bronchitis, nonfatal heart attacks, and pred mature death. States and tribes were given an opportunity to respond to the espond agency’s recommendations, and provide new information or analyses if appropriate. EPA ation representatives said the agency will consider those responses, along with the public comment, before making its final decisions. They must issue final designations by Dec. 18, 2008. As of this writing, the public comment period was set to end in late September. The government has told those businesses they must clean up their environmental output before they will be allowed to reopen. Du Shazhong, deputy head of the Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau said that businesses have been ordered to stop or limit production if they cannot resolve their pollution problems. Authorities from the Olympic committees had expressed extreme concern over the air and water quality many months before the Games, which took place in August. There was even talk of limiting the events, or even canceling some in the event the conditions did not improve. China responded by taking a number of actions, including shutting down higherpolluting businesses, eliminating over half of the vehicular traffic, and practicing rain-mak- 6-9 The Economic Times ACE Water Tech 2008, Mumbai, India, www.etacetech.com Free Site Remediation Workshop by Adventus, Caris and FMC, Houston, www.adventusgroup.com JAN 2009 28-29 EAW 2009 (Everything MARCH 2009 3-5 JUNE 2009 17-19 The National Disaster 13 About Water), New Delhi, India, www.eawater.com RemTEC 09, the Remediation Technology Summit, Marriot Atlanta Marquis, Atlanta, (888) 530-6714 www.remtec09.com Reconstruction Expo, New Orleans, Jimmy Mouton, (770) 645-0046, www.ndrexpo.com 17-18 Storm Sewer Design, Madison, Wisc., http://epdweb.engr.wisc.edu/webj892 Visit the Calendar of Events at www.pollutionengineering.com for additional information.
