According to a document drafted by the agency and reported by the Associated Press and the Washington Post, but not released for public review, the agency has decided that perchlorate would not result in a “meaningful opportunity for health risk reduction for persons served by public-water systems.” Opponents of the decision claim that pressure from the Pentagon led to this decision. The military has been blamed for most of the contamination, and it is believed they would incur the largest liability should perchlorate be regulated in water. The Pentagon denied any part in the EPA’s final decision. An EPA spokesperson reported that the agency should have a final decision by the end of the year. In absence of federal action, states have acted independently. In 2007, California adopted a drinking water standard of 6 parts per billion. Massachusetts has set a drinking water standard of 2 parts per billion. Any company that has more than a regulated volume of a hazardous chemical on site at any time during the year is required to have a risk management plan (RMP) according to the act. During a routine inspection by the EPA at the Dovex Fruit Co. in Wenatchee, Wash., it was noted that the company stored anhydrous ammonia. The company was storing more of the chemical than its 10,000-lb. limit. They were fined $98,241 and have since written a proper plan that has been approved and Leadership Forum, Washington, D.C., www.cg-la.com/gilf2.php 19-21 The Economic Times ACE Water Tech 2008, New Delhi, India, www.etacetech.com JAN 2009 28-29 EAW 2009 (Everything MARCH 2009 3-5 JUNE 2009 17-19 The National Disaster JAN 2009 19-21 Environment 2009, Abu Dhabi, www.ee-uae.com About Water), New Delhi, India, www.eawater.com RemTEC 09, the Remediation Technology Summit, Marriot Atlanta Marquis, Atlanta, (888) 530-6714 www.remtec09.com Reconstruction Expo, New Orleans, Jimmy Mouton, (770) 645-0046, www.ndrexpo.com FEB 2009 Visit the Calendar of Events at www.pollutionengineering.com for additional information.
