Through enhanced aerobic bioremediation, the addition of oxygen (an electron donor) can, in most cases, increase the number and vitality of indigenous microorganisms performing aerobic biodegradation. The key to optimizing the cost, effectiveness and longevity of this process is ensuring the use of a controlledrelease oxygen compound. ORC® and ORC Advanced® In 1994, Regenesis pioneered controlled-release oxygen technology through the development of a patented molecular structure. This effort resulted in a cost-effective material that could produce (release) oxygen for periods of up to 12 months on a single application; it was aptly named Oxygen Release Compound (ORC®). Upon hydration, ORC material releases its oxygen supply gradually over time producing a longterm, consistent oxygen supply that is highly conducive to the aerobic biodegradation process. More recently, ORC Advanced® was developed, which utilizes the same patented technology, however, pound for pound it contains more oxygen than its predecessor, ORC. The Importance of Controlled-Release Oxygen The use of controlled–release ORC and ORC Advanced offers several distinct benefits: • A single injection can provide oxygen for periods of up to 12 months - other O oxygen release materials may require up to 3 or more injections to produce similar longevity. (See Figure 1) • Additional product application and material costs are avoided with a long oxygen release profile. • Controlled-release avoids rapid, wasteful and costly oxygen loss (bubble-off) exhibited with the use of other oxygen release materials. • A proven track record as these technologies have been applied and proven effective on thousands of sites worldwide. • Advanced technical support from a staff of highly qualified and experienced geologists, engineers and scientists.
