The Necessity Design a pump to safely handle red blood cells during heart/lung operations, without contamination. Create a full line of thermoplastic pumps to safely handle a broad range of corrosive, hazardous, abrasive and other fluids over the full pH range, plus ultrapure fluids and wastewater. Provide a wide choice of thermoplastic materials for use over a wide temperature range to satisfy process industry needs. Develop a plastic pump designed to permit installation in shallow or very deep sumps, even if the sumps are in factories where height is limited. Design a cantilevered sump pump for a wide variety of aggressive fluids, and with all liquid contact components furnished in homogeneous, virgin thermoplastics and constructed so that it will have no immersed bearings, and will be able to run dry without damage. The most widely used pump in process industries for transferring aggressive fluids is the horizontal centrifugal design. A major problem it faced was the high maintenance costs for downtime for seal inspection and replacement. This was a thorn in the side of plant managers. These problems still exist in standard centrifugal thermoplastic and metal pump designs. Magnetically driven centrifugal pumps have become popular because they are sealless, easy to maintain, efficient to run and are available in a wide range of corrosion resistant metals and plastic lined designs. Troubles were faced with difficulties in selecting lining and troublesome eddy currents. As the use of these new, engineered, chemically inert thermoplastics to replace the costly stainless steels and exotic metals, spread throughout the world, the necessity for providing information about their selection and application became critical. Textbook data were based on laboratory tests and successful users hesitated to share their information with competitors. The necessity for action was obvious, The Vanton Invention Creation in 1946 of the Flex-i-liner peristaltic pump with all fluid contact parts made of chemically inert plastics. During the past 60 years, Vanton has built the world’s most complete line of thermoplastic pump designs for pumping acids, caustics, salts, solvents, halogens, DI water and other problem fluids. Vanton pump designs for use to 300˚F are offered in PVC, CPVC, PP, PE, PP, PE, ECTFE, PVDF, and PTFE. Vanton created the Giraffe vertical pump design and has delivered these sump pumps as tall as 50 feet. The design features sectional construction that permits installation in deep sumps, even where head room is low. Vanton developed the SGK vertical line thermoplastic pumps that avoids any immersed bearings or bushings, and permits indefinite dry running with no danger of seizing. It is in wide use for water and wastewater as well as many process industry applications. Vanton created the CHEM-GARD line of thermoplastic centrifugals with an award-winning design that featured a wide open seal area and a sliding bar pedestal that simplified inspection and substantially reduced the maintenance costs. This exclusive design feature is also standard on the full line of ANSI centrifugal pumps. Vanton solved these problems by providing magnetically driven pumps with all fluid contact components made of solid, molded and chemically inert, homogeneous thermoplastics. The dual nonmetallic can assembly avoids the troublesome eddy currents, enhances efficiency and minimizes maintenance. To meet the challenge, Vanton kept a detailed list of every installation, the conditions of service, and the specific materials in contact with the fluids. They also encouraged their customers to permit the transfer of this data into feature articles for the trade press. Reprints of these articles form the basis of the VANTON TECHNICAL LIBRARY, a library that currently contains 172 technical articles and application case histories.
