The roof of a distribution center in Fontana, Calif., now holds 600,000 square feet of shiny black silicon panels that will produce enough electricity to power 1,300 homes with solar generated electricity. There are nearly 150 projects in the final plan to place these silent generators on building roofs in the area. The final design should yield 250 million watts of generating capacity. That would be sufficient to power 162,000 homes. “Projects like this one show the world you Southern California Edison installed thin film solar photovoltaic panels can protect the environment and pump up on a 600,000-sq.-foot rooftop of a the economy, and I am proud to say it is hapFontana warehouse. The panels will pening right here in California,” said Gov. feed electricity back into the grid. Arnold Schwarzenegger. (Photo credit: Southern California While a second site is planned, Southern Edison) California Edison said they would have to wait for approval to continue with the project. That is expected early this year. Sites are picked by their location to Edison customers. Building owners are paid rent for the use of their roofs. 23 2009 Sustainability Conference, Kansas State University, http://sustainability.kstate.edu/conferences/leadingkansas 27-30 Vapor Intrusion 2009, San Diego, www.awma.org/go/vaporintrusion09 U 28-30 EAW 2009 (Everything About Water), New Delhi, India, www.eawater.com FEB 2009 1-4 EUEC 2009, 12th Annual Conference & Expo, Phoenix Convention Center, Phoenix, www.euec.com Fifth International Conference on Remediation of Contaminated Sediments, Jacksonville, Fla., www.battelle.org/ conferences/sediments 2-5 10-12 1st International Chemical Engineering Conference and Exhibition, Homs, Syria, www.syrianengineers.com 18-20 Environmental Industry Summit 2009, Coronado, Calif., http://events.zweigwhite.com/eisummit/index.asp 23-25 14th Annual National Ethanol Conference Policy & Marketing, San Antonio, www.nationalethanolconference. com/registration 23-26 Energy & Environment 2009, Bangalore, India, +91-124-4013871 28-3 Disinfection 2009, Atlanta, www.wef.org/disinfection MARCH 2009 1-5 Water China 2009/PVP China 2009, 10th Water, Wastewater & Water Treatment China, Guangzhou, China, www.waterchina.merebo.com Keeping Up To Date RTP Environmental Associations and Citation Technologies joined forces to develop a new product to keep up with prevention of significant deterioration (PSD) and new source review (NSR) regulations from the EPA.
