Good waste strategies, based on convenience, m Good waste strategies, based on convenience, minimization, communication and planning, can turn a federal burden into an economic boon. N early every industrial process generates some sort of waste. Identifying waste streams and exploring various handling, recycling and disposal options will help ensure worker safety, preserve the environment and reduce disposal costs. Waste collection and segregation Although it is not always practical – or necessary – to segregate every individual waste stream into its own container, dumping everything together may not be safe, and could lead to higher overall disposal costs or reduction in the potential recyclability of wastes. Making waste collection convenient is an essential step to safely managing wastes and keeping costs down. Satellite accumulation areas are one way to help accommodate this. Workers who have the ability to collect wastes “at or near the point of generation” [40 CFR 262.34(c)(1)] are more likely to be diligent in their efforts than workers who are required to take their wastes to centralized collection points that are a distance from their work areas. When satellite accumulation areas are not an option, clean, serviceable waste collection areas can encourage workers in their efforts. Serviceable areas are those that are stocked with the proper tools and equipment to facilitate proper waste collection. Clearly labeling each waste collection container is another Waste compactors come in many sizes. All of them can reduce the waste volume, which will save money. important step. Just one drop of a listed hazardous waste mixed into a container of non-hazardous or otherwise recyclable waste subjects the entire container to hazardous waste regulations [40 CFR 261.3(a)(2)(iv)].
