Pollution Engineering - February 2009 - (Page 31) SOFTWAREGUIDE 2009 Environmental Software Review By Roy Bigham t is generally accepted that computers now control or are necessary for nearly every aspect of our daily routines. Even refrigerators can now scan the food placed inside them and maintain a shopping list. It can then connect to the Internet and have an order waiting for you at your local market. In reality, it is not the computer that is the brains behind all that tiny technology. Rather it is the clever software that deftly maneuvers those itty-bitty electrons down the narrow pathways within the microscopic circuitry of those machines. With the proper software, we can gather data with incredible accuracy, check the data for errors, analyze the data and make decisions all automatically. Then, after the ones and zeros have completed all the assigned tasks, they give us a comprehensive report of what they did and why. I Fifteen years ago, it would take hours to make a presentation graphic of the data collected from monitoring wells to show the water levels and the underground movement of that water across the site. Today, that same data can automatically be ported to a CAD software package and a vastly more detailed drawing is completed in seconds. Additionally, the software probably will not miss a data point. Software capability is improving constantly as new ideas and new algorithms are developed. Here is a list of companies that provide quality products to assist in a variety of ways. Following this list of companies is a chart that will allow a direct comparison of capabilities. Use the charts to find the software provider that has the right mix and then use the contact information here to ask questions. SOFTWARE PROVIDER LISTINGS A V Systems Inc.
