At least two facilities were contacted by individuals falsely claiming to be EPA inspectors, who then cited potential violations and penalties. In both cases, a salesman for a chemical firm showed up later offering products to address the alleged violations. Granholm and her legislators to halt the construction of all new coal-fired power plants in Michigan. Coal and nuclear energy are currently the most affordable energy technologies available in the state. 4 KANSAS: FISH CONSUMPTION ADVISORY The Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Department of Wildlife and Parks are issuing revised fish consumption advisories for 2009.The advisories identify species of fish that should be eaten in limited quantities or, in some cases, avoided altogether because of contamination found in tested fish. The advisories include guidelines for mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls in fish, perchlorate in fish and other aquatic life, and lead and cadmium in shellfish. Oregonians may recycle their unwanted computers, computer monitors and TVs for free at one of the E-Cycles collection sites in the state. Anyone can bring up to seven items for free recycling. For a complete list of the 225 collection sites, go to www.oregonecycles.org and click on the orange box that reads “Where can I find an Oregon E-Cycles collector?” or call (888) 5E-CYCLE from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. 7 2 MINNESOTA: REVISIONS TO SOLID WASTE RULES The Minnesota Pollution Control agency has proposed rule revisions to prevent listed demolition and construction materials going to landfills that are prohibited from accepting them. The rule consolidates existing land disposal prohibitions for these materials in one place. It also establishes a deadline for removing items and materials before the commencement of demolition or renovation. SOUTH DAKOTA: SURFACE WATER HEARING POSTPONED The December 9 public hearing concerning proposed changes to Surface Water Quality standards was postponed and will be held at the March 2009 meeting of the Water Management Board. Comments that have been received will be kept on file and presented at the March meeting. 5 8 MASSACHUSETTS: RULES FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY The Department of Energy Resources has released regulations expanding support for renewable and alternative energy technologies mandated by the Green Communities Act enacted last year.
