Stimulus Plan Could Move Water Industry The stimulus package, which includes $6 billion for water infrastructure improvements, could get 400 wastewater projects off the ground, according to a recent post by The McIlvaine Company on Environmentalexpert.com. According to the post, of the 16,000 municipal wastewater plants, 4,000 purify more than 1 million gallons per day. Of these, a fifth are planning have minor modifications and 10 percent have major expansion or modification plans, including additional plants. McIlvaine said the funds will likely be distributed as loans and grants through the Clean Water and Drinking Water State Revolving Fund, and “will target those ‘ready-to-go’ projects that can begin construction within 120 days of receipt of funds.” The average project will be in excess of $10 million. Coal Ash Spill Cleanup A massive spill of coal ash sludge in Tennessee is estimated to cost $825 million to clean up the area and waters around a Tennessee Valley Authority power plant. A containment pond failed, allowing 1.1 billion gallons of coal ash sludge to flood surrounding homes and pour into a river. It is estimated that the materials have covered 300 acres with up to nine feet of grayish muck. Company officials stated that the power utility has already spent $31 million is cleanup activities for December and January alone.
