It begins with mercury. n early February, the Obama administration demonstrated their desire to toughen air pollution rules by reversing the Bush administration’s executive orders and filing papers with the U.S. Supreme Court removing the executive appeal of a ruling that would have resulted in relaxing mercury emissions from power plants. Last year, an appeals court ruled that the Bush plan to allow utilities to purchase emission credits for mercury emissions violated current law. The Supreme Court was scheduled to take up the issue next month. The EPA released a statement that the agency would soon begin crafting a new rule that would limit mercury emissions. The new administration also announced its intention to carefully review the waiver request from California and other states to allow them to have the right to control emissions of gases labeled as greenhouse gases. 19-21 EnviroEnergy 2009, Chandigarh, India, www.enviroenergy2009.org 23-26 Urban Water Management, Overland Park, Kan., www.urbanwatermgt.com 24-25 The Big Deal 2009, Phoenix, www.nbabigdeal.org I 24-26 JEC Composites Show 2009, Porte de Versailles, Paris, www.jeccomposites. com 25-26 18th Business and Industry’s Environmental Health & Safety Symposium, Cincinnati, Ohio, www.MECseminars.com 26-28 2nd International Trade Fair for Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency, Arad, Romania, www.energy-server.de 30-2 WaterEC, the International Water Efficiency Conference, Newport Beach, Calif., www.waterec.net 31-2 UTECH Europe 2009 Conference, the Netherlands, www.utecheurope.nl APRIL 2009 7-8 Carbon TradEx America, Washington D.C., www.carbontradeexamerica.com 8-9 Cooperation for Waste Issues - Kharkiv, Ukraine, www.waste.com.ua/cooperation Carbon Trading Markets Falling E.U. carbon trading markets continued to falter as the economy weakened and production slowed. Emission permits are falling to records lows with experts predicting they will approach zero. “The only real price floor is zero,” said Per Lekander, Paris-based UBS managing director and utilities analyst. Emission prices have plunged over 60 percent from their peak last July because of declining factory production in the face of the current recession. Lekander further forecast that prices may drop an additional 58 percent. This information was reported by Bloomberg.net. Hotel Owner Charged with Felony The corporate owner of The Standard was charged with one felony count of disposing hazardous waste without a permit in Los Angeles.
