Pollution Engineering - April 2009 - (Page 21) GREENFILES By R o y Bi gha m a n d Se t h F i sh e r Being green is here to stay and it can make real sense as well as cents. Herein are stories describing how companies today are taking advantage of the awesome power of green. Green Energy ater is a very powerful substance in nature. It can knock over vessles of any size in the right circumstances. It has been known to toss homes and vehicles around like they were toys. Hydroelectric power is considered to be one of the cleanest forms of energy production available today. Perhaps one solution to our energy needs is to find more efficient methods of harnessing this power. The town of Hastings, Minn. was granted permits to install a hydrokinetic turbine system designed by Hydro Green Energy, Houston, Texas, just downstream of their 4.4 MW hydropower dam in the Mississippi river. The turbine is expected to add 5.7 percent capacity to the system. CENSUS Detect and quantify Dehalococcoides and other bacteria capable of reductive dechlorination of PCE and TCE. CENSUS® provides a direct avenue to quantify both the bacteria and the functional genes responsible for biodegradation of chlorinated solvents. • Dehalococcoides (qDHC) – The only known group of bacteria capable of complete reductive dechlorination of PCE/TCE to ethene. • Vinyl chloride reductase (qVC) – The genes encoding enzymes specifically responsible for reductive dechlorination of vinyl chloride to ethene.
