ORS Filter Bucket™ Floating passive product skimmer Limiting factors Organic removal in the aeration basin is related to diffusion of the organic materials and oxygen into the biological floc. The floc size and hence the surface area will depend on the power density in the aeration basin. The power density in a typical complete mix process will be 150 to 200 HP/Mgal of aeration basin. The power density in the first stage of a threestage process will average 500 HP/Mgal yielding a smaller floc and hence a higher organic removal rate is limited by the oxygen transfer capacity in the basin. This maximum removal rate relates to a power density of 750 HP/Mgal of basin volume. A reduced removal rate will be observed in stages two and three. When nitrification is required, it will control the overall kinetic rate. For example, in Figure 3, nitrification will increase the overall detention time from 0.6 to 0.8 days. This increase usually will be added to the third stage. The removal rate temperature affects the organic removal rate over a temperature range of 4°C to 31°C. For industrial wastewaters, θ has been found to vary from 1.065 to 1.10.
