In the U.S., one company has found a familiar way to offer consumers both the heart and brain benefits derived from olive oil and ingredients rich in omega-3. Hearts&Minds Peanut Butter with Olive Oil and Omega-3 packs a powerful punch for health-conscious consumers by providing both heart and brain benefits. According to the manufacturer, Hearts&Minds Peanut Butter replaces 40% of the peanut oil with olive oil, making this the first natural peanut butter to keep consumers’ hearts and minds healthy through its innovative combination of olive oil and omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA). The product goes on to claim that it better helps consumers win the battle between eating what they like and eating what is good for them. Many peanut butters on the market incorporate omega-3 into their formulations; it is the unique replacement of nearly half of the peanut oil with olive oil that differentiates this particular product. This peanut butter’s unique concept of replacing a staple ingredient with healthier, more beneficial natural components could potentially be adapted by various other comfort foods not currently considered healthy or beneficial. Functional Packaging A prime example of the movement toward eco-friendly packaging is Target’s Archer Farms cereal. Instead of the typical, cardboard rectangularshaped boxes, these cereals are now sold in oblong-shaped boxes containing an inner plastic lining holding the cereal. The easy-flow spout and snap-shut, reclosable lid maintain freshness. A hinge on the lid, located midpoint of the closure, simplifies dispensing by allowing half of the lid to flip up. A round, clear window on the lid provides a clear view of the remaining cereal. This oval-shaped box has three benefits: its rounded edges and slightly smaller size, compared to regular cereal boxes, saves space; the consumer does not have to bother with an inner bag; and the packaging promotes reusability, due to its innovative packaging features, which closely resemble the look of Tupperware-style containers. Kid-sized Kraft is the most prominent 100-calorie pack manufacturer, with more than 30 varieties marketed under its Nabisco brand. These portion packs are typically marketed to calorie-conscious adults, but Kraft Nabisco’s latest venture in portion control is one of its most noteworthy yet, as it is the first product offering portion-controlled snacks for children. In the U.S., the prevalence of childhood obesity has alerted parents in recent years to the perils of large portions and steady diets of foods laden with saturated fat, sugar and calories. Nabisco has launched a line of pre-portioned snacks geared toward children that helps parents make better decisions when providing snack portions to their little ones. Nabisco Itty Packs are available in “Mini” combo packs of children's favorite snacking varieties, including Mini Teddy Grahams & Mini Honey Maid Bees Grahams, Mini Nilla Wafers & Barnum’s Animals and Mini Cheese Nips & Smilin' Ritz Crackers. These products are marketed in 80-calorie packs. Kool-Aid Going Green Many consumers have turned to elaborate filtration systems, reusable water containers or tap water to diminish plastic waste, and companies have aided these efforts by creating programs to further promote the reduction of bottled water consumption. One of the more interesting examples of such an initiative is the recent introduction of the KoolAid Singles reusable water bottle kit. Kool-Aid Singles drink mixes are targeted to children and often consumed on-the-go, since they can easily be added to bottled water for a portable, refreshing treat. To motivate children to consume the product in a sustainable way, Kool-Aid partnered with water filtration company Brita and reusable bottle manufacturer Nalgene to create this unique product.
