RealTime - Fall 2008 - (Page 33) “ The World’s Game Maker” improves inventory accuracy and achieves $400,000 annualized ROI with Intermec mobile computers and printers BY KIM WATTS Creating a gaming company in the midst of the Great Depression must have seemed a risky proposition at the time, but starting with a small wooden pinball machine named the “Ballyhoo,” the Bally Manufacturing Company found immediate success. From the “Ballyhoo” to the “Bally Baby,” a tiny castiron slot machine filled with mechanical gears, springs and levers, the company invented the first slot machine featuring a “bottomless hopper,” the first fully electronic reel-spinning slot and the world’s first electronic slot management system. Bally Technologies, as it has been called since 2006, is now the world’s leading gaming systems company. An Intermec customer for more than 10 years, Bally Technologies designs, manufactures, operates and distributes slot and video machines to more than 692 gaming locations globally. It also designs, integrates and sells highly specialized computerized monitoring systems that provide casinos with networked accounting and security services for its gaming machines, with more than 363,000 game-monitoring units installed worldwide. To further increase efficiency in its warehouse, the company recently implemented a new warehouse management system (WMS) by Manhattan Associates, and turned to Intermec and its partner Ryzex to upgrade its hardware to the Intermec CK31 mobile computer and PB50 mobile printer. The CK31 was selected for its rugged and reliable computing and scanning flexibility, complemented by the PB50 printer for on-the-spot printing. “With our new warehouse management system in place, we needed the right tools to ensure that we make efficient, real-time inventory transactions,” said Tony Evans, director of logistics for Bally Technologies. “We selected Intermec because of our longstanding successful partnership and because of their industry-leading products. We know they will continue to provide us with the solutions and services needed to make our company function as effectively as possible.” Continuous improvement in efficiency and accuracy Since upgrading to the new Intermec system, Bally Technologies’ overall warehouse efficiency has improved and accuracy is now in the upper 90th percentile. As users become more proficient with the new system and solution, the company is confident it will reach its ultimate goal of 99.9 percent perfect orders. By using the CK31 to track and streamline warehouse operations including picking, packing, shipping and receiving, the company can now adjust its inventory in real time during cycle counts, no longer having to wait until after the count to make necessary adjustments. Additionally, the real-time inventory transactions make it easier for schedulers and buyers to make informed decisions based on the current warehouse status. “Since upgrading our Intermec solution, we are very pleased with how our inventory accuracy rate has dramatically improved,” Evans said. “We look forward to continuously increasing the $400,000 annualized return on investment that has already been achieved.” For a free subscription: www.realtime.intermec.com 33 http://www.realtime.intermec.com
