RealTime - Fall 2008 - (Page 38) Puma, one of the world’s premier leading multicategory sport-lifestyle brands, has a history closely tied to some of the world’s greatest sporting events. The Herzogenaurach, Germany-based company first found fame on the feet of American track legend Jesse Owens in the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, when he won four Gold Medals wearing Dassler (as the company was then known) shoes. Athletes wearing Dassler shoes shattered two world and three Olympic records at those games. In 1952, Josef Barthel of Luxembourg won Puma’s first Olympic Gold in the 1500 meter event at the Helsinki games, and the U.S. women’s relay team won Gold for the 4x100 meter—all wearing Puma (the company was renamed in 1948). At the 1962 World Cup in Chile, Pelé became a World Cup winner for the second time—in Puma shoes. The company takes pride in harnessing its resources and experience to provide its consumers with innovative products. It also uses innovations to efficiently ship its products to customers. Five-fold increase in inventory turns Puma’s Scandinavian central warehouse, located in the southern Swedish city of Helsingborg, houses over 18,000 sports items in its 12,000 square meters. With approximately 70 employees and two work shifts, the warehouse dispatches 30,000 items a day directly to retailers in Sweden, Norway, Finland and the Baltic states. In a short time, the number of stored items has grown substantially, and with it the size of the warehouse. In fact, inventory turnover has increased from SEK200 millions to SEK1 billion in just six years. Until two years ago, all warehouse management was handled using a paper-based system. Synchronization between restocking from the buffer to picking worked badly, and the number of incorrect deliveries and complaints “It is like comparing night and day. Absolutely everything is better and more time-efficient.” – Jörgen Larsson, communications and security manager, Puma Nordic and Baltic Photo courtesy of Puma 38 realtime / 2008
