JOHN DOE PROFILE Headline Charting Courses Flying high is something Chris Johnston, Intermec group manager for RFID product strategy, relates to in both his professional and personal lives. Professionally, he and his team are finishing the successful launch of the IP30 handheld RFID reader, which was recently voted a “Best of Show” finalist at RFID Journal LIVE! 2008. Privately, he charts his course in a Cessna. “Product strategy and flying are both highly rewarding. They both can take you to new places—literally and metaphorically. If you’re successful as a product strategist, you’re going to take the company in a new direction. You’re going to see something in the market that other people don’t see and you can move the company forward in an exciting new direction.” Johnston’s trajectory has taken him from Purdue University, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering, to Loyola University of Chicago for an MBA and through startups in Silicon Valley before landing in Everett with Intermec. Throughout his career, his focus has been on wireless technologies and balancing technology with customer needs. “I have a passion for product marketing. It’s like mixing oil and water. On the one hand, you have to be effective on the technical front and on the other, you have to be a right-brained person that’s a good writer, has good business sense and customer focus.
