RealTime - Spring 2008 - (Page 4) VIEW Clarify. Commit. Connect. THAT WAS THE THEME OF THE INTERMEC I-COMM CONFERENCE HELD THIS PAST January: “Clarify. Commit. Connect.” It’s a theme that is driving our business and one that you’ll see throughout this issue of RealTime. The RFID market is one where clarification is necessary. After the wild euphoria of the early Gen 2 days, the market is now struggling with a sense of “open loop hangover” pessimism. The market was driven by over-hype and, as a result, too much investment. Looking forward the most likely evolution of the RFID market is in closed loop applications, which will result in the definition of market segments that will find success using the technology to enhance their business processes. We’re already seeing results in automotive manufacturing, warehouse operations, mobile MRO, specialty hauling, and logistics and postal distribution segments. Working with our channel partners, the Intermec RFID team has selected the aforementioned verticals and applications as areas we will focus on developing RFID systems that can be deployed to solve specific business problems in each segment. Intermec is connecting through events like i-comm (there’s a recap starting on page 26) and is committed to working with our partners to apply our best resources to provide successful solutions. You can read about some of the following successes in this issue of RealTime: CDS Logistics turned to CSSI and Intermec to ensure timely delivery of its kitchen and commercial cabinets, reducing shortages by 44 percent. The UK’s Home Delivery Network Limited is using 4,450 CN3 mobile computers with software by Syclo LLC to streamline the delivery of more than 110 million parcels annually. We Energies proved just how rugged its CN3 mobile solution was when a unit was accidentally left on the side of the road for two weeks—with no loss of data or performance. Intermec has a renewed sense of entrepreneurial urgency and market intimacy driving us to focus on solving business problems for specific market segments. We are committed to combining our experience, broad portfolio of products and dedicated o deliver compelling solutions to our customers. partners to de ve co pe g s RAY CRONIN VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER, RFID 4 realtime / 2008
