San Manuel Custom Book - (Page 20) A SYSTEM BASED ON TRADITION ernment-to-government relations with federal, state and local agencies, and a true partner in the greater San Bernardino community. NURTURING TOMORROW’S LEADERS The tribe strongly believes in the importance of continuing tradition and preserving culture. In its efforts to educate the community and pass on traditions to their youth, the tribe actively supports art schools, museums, and cultural organizations and programs. Every year the tribe hosts an annual pow wow to educate and share American Indian culture and traditions with the people in their community. Hundreds of Native Americans from all over the country come together with members of the local community to share in their culture and history. In developing a sustainable economy beyond gaming, San Manuel hopes to secure its future for the next seven generations, and beyond. San Manuel also believes in the importance of investing in the education of its young men and women, instilling in them the desire to provide capable leadership in the coming generations. Former Chairman Deron Marquez, who has emerged as one of the nation’s leading lecturers on sovereignty and self-governance, obtained his college and post-graduate education with funds generated by tribal government enterprises. “Education has long been the path for climbing the economic ladder, and for many American Indians college is no longer just a dream thanks to various tribal government programs funded by gaming,” Marquez said. “For our tribal citizens, attending any school is an option, provided they are accepted. “The generations before us never had the chance to experience the shapes and forms of education, except on a very limited scale.” Wayne Taylor, former chairman of the Hopi Tribe of Arizona, calls Marquez “a native leader wise beyond his years.” “Serrano citizens such as former chairman Marquez and Rico Garcia represent the new generation of tribal leaders," said Jacob L. Coin, San Manuel’s executive director, office of public affairs.“They combine deep respect for native traditions with the education, political vision and economic savvy needed to propel tribal nations into the future with confidence.” SAN MANUEL Deron Marquez Rico Garcia, managing director of global business development 20
