MAYTON III, EDITOR, SUSTAINABLE FACILITY ocusing on the industrial sector, Sustainable Facility approached Ford Land in regard to its sustainable strategies relative to industrial manufacturing facility management. Sustainable Facility corresponded with Joseph E. Black, manager of Site Management Programs, Ford Land, and Bill Allemon, CEM, manager of Energy Efficiency for Ford Land. In addition to one of North America’s largest green roofs the green roof that caps Ford’s Dearborn Truck Assembly Building, Ford has applied living roofs on two facilities — one in California and another at its World Headquarters in Dearborn, Mich. With the exterior of these mammoth industrial facilities ensconced in green, it would only make sense that the company gives equal attention to enhancing its interior environment. Ford outsources green cleaning services for its facilities, and provided Sustainable Facility with an overview of the processes in addition to specific cleaning products and strategies used to reduce environmental impact. F “Purchasing and strong supplier relationships are key in driving standardization programs through all our facilities,” he said. Products and strategies that meet Ford’s highperformance criteria include: • High-concentration cleaning products with dilution control systems lessen shipping waste, transportation costs and products’ carbon footprint. • Foaming hand soaps reduce usage and waste. • High recycled fiber counts on paper products reduce waste to landfill. • Large hand-towel rolls reduce waste to landfill and transportation costs. • Elimination of desk-side trash cans lends to improved employee engagement and accountability. • Low-density trashcan liners improve decomposition in landfills. • Standardization of products reduces usages and inventory, improves compliance to green standards. Some of Ford’s supplier partners for these products include Kimberly Clark, Spartan Chemical, Rubbermaid and NSS Enterprises. HOUSEKEEPING Ford places importance on keeping facilities clean and orderly since it has an effect on morale and safety. According to the company, housekeeping activities are best addressed as part of an “ongoing” defined process. Black summed it up succinctly: “Regarding green housekeeping, in recent years Ford has reviewed products with an eye not only on cost, quality and effect on our people, but also the product’s effect on the environment. “Most cleanup activities are scheduled during the normal five-day work schedule, which gives our housekeeping team members the opportunity to consistently clean the work environment,” he said. “Cleaning of production equipment can become very difficult because of limited access, and in some cases confined space requirements or work-at-height requirements. Many factors need to be taken into consideration in order to maintain a safe, green environment for our cleaners and employees.” FACILITY OVERVIEW Facilities participating in Ford’s sustainable initiatives include the company’s World Headquarters building, the Ford Dearborn Research and Engineering Center, commercial buildings in the Dearborn area, as well as the Dearborn Truck Plant located at the Ford Rouge Center. According to Joseph E. Black, initial results and best practices are shared and replicated.
