Sustainable Facility - November 2008 - (Page 39) pany’s answer is leadership and responsibility as a good corporate citizen. “When we looked at all the defined criterion, reviewed supplier programs, and visited suppliers’ manufacturing locations, we found the products to be well engineered and well developed, so most product decisions supported multiple objectives, in addition to being green,” Black said. In 2007, Ford implemented a new global facilities environmental scorecard and the Global Emissions Manager database to better track and improve facilities’ environmental impacts. The company’s global environmental goals address a range of environmental impacts, including energy use, emissions, water use and waste generation, and include a detailed scorecard for every facility that is able to be tracked and can be used to accelerate improvements (see table on page 38 for example). According to Bill Allemon, CEM, most of what Ford does in the plants is measured against defined scorecard metrics. “Finding a ‘triple bottom line’ solution is essential,” he said. “Our industry and company are not in a position to absorb high cost premiums, simply for the reason of ‘going green.’ Environmentally friendly products must present a sound business case, when compared to traditional technologies.” to identify energy saving opportunities by analyzing data collected from automated metering systems. “By reviewing performance data and performing on-site energy assessments, our team works with the local plant to generate A-list projects and process improvements,” Allemon said. “We’ve used energy performance contracting to upgrade facility infrastructure and fund the investment through energy savings. Since 2000, we have invested over $200 million in our facilities through this process.” Project examples for the facilities include lighting and HVAC upgrades, facility automation and control systems, and upgrades to production equipment. In 2008, Ford won in the category of Sustained Excellence, identifying the company’s commitment to protecting the environment through energy efficiency. The company also has a number of plants and commercial buildings that have achieved ENERGY STAR recognition, including the Kansas City Assembly Plant, where the hybrid Escape vehicle is assembled. “Not only is our final product fuel efficient, but the facility that assembles the vehicle is efficient as well,” said Allemon. Ford has built several Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified buildings, including the Product Review Center, Rouge Visitor’s Center and others. “Ford is working at changing the way we maintain our plants and facilities, company-wide,” Allemon said. “The Dearborn Truck Plant employs a number of green initiatives and the associated Visitor Center, run by The Henry Ford, is LEED Gold certified. The Dearborn Truck Plant has a green roof that is the largest in the U.S., which reduces demand for mechanical cooling as well as generating oxygen and providing a natural habitat.” Falcon Waterfree urinals reduce more than just water use.
