Sustainable Facility - February 2009 - (Page 28) spotlight WHIRLWIND SOLAR ENERGY SYSTEMS SOLAR Energy Systems for the Architectural, Commercial, Industrial, Agricultural, Residential, Municipal and Self Storage Markets. Whirlwind was founded in 1955 in Houston, Texas, as a small power fan and louver company. As air conditioners became more popular and affordable, “Curley” Sturdivant decided to shift his business to pre-engineered metal buildings. In 1963 Whirlwind began manufacturing pre-engineered metal buildings. By the turn of the century, Whirlwind became one of the largest manufacturers of metal buildings and metal building components in this industry. Our diverse line-up includes metal buildings, metal roofing, walls, trim, accessories and now SOLAR Energy Systems for the architectural, commercial, industrial, agricultural, residential, municipal and self storage markets. With a wide variety of concealed and exposed fastener roof and wall panels, available in a variety of gauges, colors (including energy star), and warranties, we have the products needed to get your metal project completed efficiently, effectively and on time. We currently operate four manufacturing facilities with over 350,000 square feet and are able to provide our customers the capability, service, experience and competitive pricing to get the job done right. Our Texas, 28 S U S TA I N A B L E F A C I L I T Y F E B R UARY 200 9 Georgia and Oklahoma plants are certified by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). The AISC certification certifies we have the personnel, organization, experience, capability and commitment to produce fabricated structural steel for Category MB, Metal Building Systems, as set forth in the AISC Quality Certification Program. Our commitment is to building green and helping to save the environment and reduce energy costs and waste, which is why our products are sustainable and green in nature. Metal buildings are a great tool for building green. The metal that is used to make a building is made from 32 to 59 percent recycled material. At the end of the lifecycle of the roof and framing, the material can be recycled once again. In addition, utilizing an energy star approved coated metal roof can also save up to 40 percent in your energy costs. Whirlwind Solar Energy Systems was recently launched as an added benefit to building green. Whirlwind Solar offers a renewable energy alternative for metal roof and metal building applications. Whirlwind’s SES is an amorphous photovoltaic peel-and- stick system that is factory or field applied to Standing Seam Roof panels. It is available in seven pre-designed packages ranging from 3 to 120 kilowatts. Benefits of the system include: being a true Building Integrated Photovoltaic system (penetration free), lightweight (less than 1lb. per square foot), lower LCA cost and is “grid tied”. In addition we will also provide the necessary electrical drawings, wire sizing, equipment sizing, and specifications for the system. Whirlwind Solar offers a FREE Return on Investment analysis available on our website (www.whirlwindsteel.com/pub/Solar), which will provide all available incentives, break even year, square footage of roof area required, budgetary cost and kW hours generated per year. Recycled material, energy saving and Solar are only a few examples of how Whirlwind can help you save the environment from unwanted waste and reduce the Urban Heat Island effect.
