FOR AIR CARGO PROVIDERS: ■ Track & Trace capability. What type of tracking and tracing capabilities does the service provider offer for supply chain visibility? Can the shipper access it via the Web? Government compliance. Is the service provider C-TPAT certified? What about compliance with other government rules and regulations? Green standards. How does the service provider reduce carbon emissions in its operations? What benefits does this provide to the shipper (reduced costs, positive corporate image, etc.)? Software & Technology. What automated systems does the service provider use to facilitate shipment transportation, visibility, and customs clearance? Is it a proprietary system or off-the-shelf? How can the shipper link to the system? Service reliability. What are the on-time transportation/delivery rates for the service provider? What is the transit time for specific trade lanes compared to competitors? Customer service. What happens when there’s a problem or discrepancy? Who is available to troubleshoot and make a decision and is service available 24/7? Customized solutions. Is the service provider able to 2008 ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ tailor a solution for each shipper, or is it more like ‘one size fits all’? Is there a cap on fuel surcharges? How does the service provider help mitigate the rising cost of fuel? What is the service provider’s expertise in the market? How long have they been in operation? What is their network of offices and/or partners? Are the service provider’s rates competitive? What are some of the value-adds that the service provider can offer to the shipper? FOR OCEAN FREIGHT PROVIDERS: ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ Evaluate the ease of making a booking with your carrier. How easy is it to communicate with the carrier? What about the quality of equipment and availability of the carrier? Does the carrier provide on-time pick-up from origin? How does the carrier’s on-time sailing measure up? What about timely arrival? Does the carrier issue accurate documentation in a timely manner? Evaluate the ease of pick-up from destination port, or on-time delivery to destination point.
