According to the analysts, there will also be a 30 percent increase in ton/kilometer by 2015 when intermodal traffic will more than double, going on to increase five-fold by 2030. James Hookham, FTA policy director, says the growth will come from more international trade, plus significant use of rail to and from new rail-connected warehouses. WT Source: Milken Institute/Greenstreet Real Estate Partners BestPerforming Cities 2008 Index, which ranks Truck Hijackings up Sharply in South Africa SHIPPERS TAKING STEPS TO AVOID TRANSSHIPMENTS A report by eyefortransport states that South Africa has experienced a sharp rise in truck hijackings, which has forced shippers to avoid transshipments in the country. According to the Institute for Security Studies, 1,245 trucks were hijacked in South Africa during the period 2007-2008, up almost 40 percent from the 892 hijackings reported in 2006-2007. This past April alone, 103 trucks were hijacked throughout the country. Many major manufacturers and importers have decided that the convenience of transshipping through South Africa is outweighed by the financial risks due to cargo theft, and efforts are underway to build railway links between Angola and Tanzania in order to avoid South Africa altogether. The rise in truck hijackings are the latest blow to South Africa’s road transport operators, who have already been reeling from the escalating cost of stolen vehicles and rising insurance premiums.
