U.S.-Oman Free Trade Pact in Effect ALL TARIFFS ON CONSUMER, INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS LIFTED A free trade agreement between the U.S. and oil-rich Oman became effective on January 1, lifting all tariff barriers to consumer and industrial products. 14 WORLD TRADE FEBRUARY 2009 According to U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab, “This will expand opportunities for exports of machinery, automobiles, optic and medical instruments, electrical machinery, and agricultural products such as vegetable oils, sugars, sweeteners and beverage bases.” In addition, Oman will provide substantial market access across its entire services sector, including a “secure, predictable” legal framework for U.S. investors operating in the sultanate. The Oman agreement builds on U.S. free trade agreements concluded with Israel, Jordan, Morocco and Bahrain. The regional free trade initiative is aimed at spurring economic growth and reform in the Middle East—an area of almost 330 million people and with a 158 billion dollar trading relationship with the United States. Costa Rica, China Launch Free Trade Talks NEGOTIATIONS TO WRAP UP NEXT YEAR Costa Rica and China have launched the first round of negotiations for a free trade agreement. Officials intend to create a “roadmap” for subsequent talks during their first meeting. A total of six rounds of talks will be held on the agreement, with hopes that negotiations will wrap up by May 2010. China is Costa Rica’s second largest trading partner, and Costa Rica is China’s second biggest in Central America. Their two-way trade is growing rapidly, with the volume hitting $2.87 billion in 2007. Among Latin American countries, China has signed a free trade agreement with Chile and is holding negotiations on a deal with Peru. Punta Colonet Port Project Still Afloat MEXICAN GOVERNMENT COULD DELAY CONSTRUCTION Despite an announcement by Mexican government officials that construction on a new container port at Punta Colonet in Baja California might be delayed, a developer says the project will move forward. Admittedly, some momentum has been lost due to the global financial downturn, but the project’s supporters say cargo gateways in North America will eventually become congested in the coming decade as global trade continues to grow, albeit at a slower clip.
