Boat U.S. - March 2008 - (Page 64) behind theboat As boating season gets into gear, those of us who “winterized’ our boats are dusting off the cobwebs and getting our boats back in the water. And I’m thinking about how I’m going to make time to go boating as much as possible this year. Despite the demands of a busy work schedule, the price of gas, and the traffic on the way to the marina, I, like you, need to get out on the water. I used to think “Ti-i-i-ime is on my side, yes it is…” back when I was much younger I knew I would live forever. And there was enough time in the day to do everything I wanted to do. However, increased responsibilities, demands of family, friends and pets have taken big bites out of my time. So have all the wonderful technological advances that have made it so easy to connect to the office night and day, at home or in the car traveling or commuting. As convenient and efficient as e-mail and cell phones are, they also infringe upon on my time. There’s a love/ hate relationship going on here. Know what I mean? “Who knows where the time goes?” The older I get, the faster time flies. Where are the extra hours I used to spend reading, taking long walks, watching movies, or just talking on the phone with friends? I love the experience and the wisdom of maturity, but I don’t like the speed at which it is passing. Remember that song by Chicago, Does anyone really know what time it is? That was back (I know I’m dating myself now) in 1969. I’m not sure I really know what the lyrics meant, but I do know it’s time to devote some serious hours to being out on the water with my husband. We’ll be fishing…well, he’ll be fishing, I’ll probably be reading a good book. I’m leaving the Blackberry back on the dock. The cell phone will be in the boat bag — but turned off. Any decision to contact the outside world will be mine alone. Let’s hope we all make extra time for family and friends to join us on the water. We deserve it. — By Nancy Michelman Nancy Michelman is the president of BoatU.S. Reach her at president@BoatUS.com. whereour flagsfly Send us a photo of your boat, preferably flying the BoatU.S. flag, and we’ll publish it here, or online at BoatUS.com.
