Boat U.S. - May 2008 - (Page 13) Access Problems Plague Anglers Over one-quarter of U.S. anglers report that problems with access to the water have forced them to cut back on fishing activities. A recent poll of over 1,800 anglers conducted by AnglerSurvey.com posed the simple question of whether anglers had to cancel a trip or stop fishing in specific locations due to access problems in the past year. Twenty-eight percent of the anglers reported such problems, and of those, 80% came from freshwater areas. In saltwater, 15% of anglers reported access problems. The discouraging bottom line, as reported by Southwick Associates, which conducted the survey: 10% of anglers either reduced their fishing activity or stopped fishing altogether. The report, released March 13, is particularly timely since members of the Sport Fishing and Boating Partnership Council, meeting the same week in Washington, DC, identified access to the water as a priority issue for boaters and anglers. The Council, an advisory body to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service chaired by Ryck Lydecker of BoatU.S., has put solutions to the access dilemma at the top of its agenda for this year, particularly for freshwater lakes, rivers and impoundments.
