Water levels on the manmade lake were nearing record lows after a multiyear drought lowered the water level by 100 feet and shortened the length of the lake by 40 miles. Last year, many beaches, docks and visitor facilities were closed as parts of the lake became unnavigable. “We’ve been so far down, a lot of people don’t even make it to the highwater mark when they hike,” said Dave Panu of Hidden Canyon Kayaks. Meanwhile, over at Folsom Lake near Sacramento, CA, boaters were ordered by state park officials to remove their boats from the lake because of record low water levels. It was the first time in 14 years that decreasing water levels forced boat owners to remove their boats from the lake before July 4th, the result of a long-term California drought. “I think this is the worst,” said Al Vautier, a local boater. “This is the 2nd of July and this is the worst I’ve seen it since I’ve been boat- ing in Folsom.” About 600 boats at Lake Marina at Brown’s Ravine were pulled from the lake under park official orders. Last year the boats were pulled on August 1 because of low water levels. “Everyone is equally disgusted,” another boater said. “We don’t question our decision to own a boat, but we are questioning whether to keep it at Folsom.” The man-made reservoir provides water to the nearby vast Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta area for agricultural use. Consumer Alert Federal laws require marine manufacturers to issue defect recall notices when boats or related equipment contain “defects which create a substantial risk of personal injury” or when they do not comply with boat manufacturing regulations. The U.S. Coast Guard recently published the following defect recall notices. Tracker Marine Group LLC, Kenner Boats, 479-885-3171 (Recall 080027S) 2007-08 Mako 181ST: Manufacturer reported that certain Mako 181ST rolled edge models with the short transom (ST) option that were manufactured between 11/01/06 and 04/24/08 possibly have incorrect capacity tags installed. Boats that may be affected have HINs KENA01MVJ607 - KENA3AMVD808. Tracker Marine Group LLC, Kenner Boats, 479-885-3171 (Recall 080026S) 2007-08 Kenner 180VST: Manufacturer reported that certain Kenner 180VST models with the short transom (ST) option manufactured between 03/01/07 AND 03/18/08 possibly have incorrect capacity tags installed. Boats that may be affected have HINs KENA01ACB707 - KENA06ACB808. Starcraft Marine, 260-593-2880 (Recall 08R2731S) 2008 1900 IO: Natural ventilation system supply and exhaust openings do not meet minimum aggregate regulations. Weber Automotive, (Recall 070052S) Fuel system quick connectors used on 2006-08 Williams Performance Tenders & Sugar Sand boats: Weber automotive fuel system quick connect fitting does not comply with federal boat manufacturing regulation 33CFR183.590 for ignition protection.
