In Florida, BoatU.S. recognized the City of Gulfport on Boca Ceiga Bay near Tampa for a public mooring field to serve transient as well as local boaters, and a public-private partnership between the City of Moorehaven on Lake Okeechobee, Glade County, and a private developer to rebuild a dilapidated marina as a key component in downtown redevelopment. In addition to these community projects, BoatU.S. also recognized a state lawmaker for an access initiative, North Carolina Rep. Arthur Williams. Last year, Williams sponsored successful legislation to revise state law for boat trailers that was preventing boats wider than eight feet, six inches access to state roads on weekends, holidays and at night, prime travel times for trailer boaters. “In each case, these projects represent excellent examples of the boating public’s ability to work together with community leaders to make an effective, reasoned case for expanding access,” said Charles Holmes, member of the BoatU.S. National Advisory Council and an executive with Boy Scouts of America who served on the Access Award judging panel. “Then they took it the step further and actually made these projects reality.” BoatU.S. created the award program in 2007 to highlight successes in protecting water access in a time when boaters were losing marina slips, service yards, and launching areas. “One of the goals in the awards program is to recognize solutions to access problems that can be replicated elsewhere, ” said Dean Clarke, executive editor of Sport Fishing Magazine and also a member of the BoatU.S. National Advisory Council. “Each project we selected has elements that other boaters and boating groups can use in their local communities to keep boating strong.” www.BoatUS.com/gov/ AccessAward — RL BoatU.S. BoatU.S. Magazine January 2009 http://www.seasidevillagefl.com http://www.BoatUS.com/gov/ http://www.seasidevillagefl.com
