Boat U.S. - January 2009 - (Page 38) AuTO The Sleek Subaru Forester Subaru completely redesigned the Forester for 2009 and took home Motor Trend magazine’s SUV of the Year award for their efforts. Subaru’s design team moved away from the older Forester’s boxy look and came up with a sleeker body style, wrapped around a slightly bigger package, adding a few inches to the wheelbase, providing more interior volume and a better ride. The result has paid off for Subaru, not just in awards, but also in increased sales, up 30% over the prior model year. For our test drive, we took the Forester out for both urban and highway driving, averaging about 22 mpg for our week of use. That’s nearly in the middle of the EPA-estimated 20 mpg city, 26 mpg highway listed for the standard 2.5-liter boxer engine. The 170-hp engine that comes standard provided good acceleration; a turbo-charged version of the same engine producing 224-hp would no doubt add some punch, but at the cost of slightly lower mileage. Loading the back of the Forester with all the stuff needed for winterizing our boat, the Subaru Forester flat cargo floor made it easy to slide heavy cases of antifreeze in and out. Under the cargo floor is a shallow pan with separate compartments for keeping tools and accessories such as your tow bar, stashed away out of sight and out of the way.
