Boat U.S. - January 2009 - (Page 5) is a boat and someone willing to share their skills. —Arthur O’Neill, Vice President, Carroll Center for the Blind, Newton, MA Outgrowing The Bligh Syndrome I just wanted to further support Steve Honour (November ’08), by pointing out that as a young commercial captain, I make it a point to be respectful and courteous with my crew. I’ve found over the years that things just seem to work better when everyone feels appreciated and comfortable. As a deckhand years ago, I had a few Bligh-like captains who made life aboard much harder than it needed to be and received far less productivity out of the crew. Everyone knows how one jerk can ruin a great day on the water, so imagine being stuck with that person for weeks or months. I’m happy to say that these guys are becoming increasingly hard to find. —Capt. Ryan Healy Baltimore, MD deserves this recognition. I survey commercial equipment, and was introduced to her by seasoned and respected yacht surveyors such as Arthur Terry, who recognized her skills. Over the years I’ve recommended Bolling to boaters in the Southeast looking for a marine surveyor, and I have not failed to get a strong thank you for sending her their way. Also, Bolling’s championing of the Nimble Nomad brought me to become a satisfied owner of a Nimble 24. —Norm Laskay Metairie, LA conservation. We should allow time for these efforts to bear fruit before doing permanent damage to our shores. —Tom Hagoort Hilton Head, SC I was pleased to see in “Fishing for a Windfall” that Fishermen’s Energy intends to support the wind-farm project three miles off Atlantic City, New Jersey. The key quote was: “Fishermen’s Energy intends to be the agent for change instead of a victim of the changes going on around it.” This is the attitude we all have to take to solve our energy crisis. Unfortunately, in my state, we’re fighting the wind farm in Nantucket Sound. My 16-yearold son and I love to fish off the shores of Boston and Cape Cod, and enjoy the beauty of the ocean and the wildlife we see. Seeing a wind farm on the water is preferable to breathing polluted air, fishing in polluted waters, and seeing fisheries die due to global warming. Wind alone cannot solve the crisis, but it can help. I applaud the efforts of Daniel Cohen and the fishing companies who make up Fishermen’s Energy. We should push all our stores to buy fish from such fishermen. —Mark Greenlaw Wayland, MA Blowing In The Wind Offshore wind farms — like offshore drilling — would produce visual pollution far out of proportion to their energy contribution. Future beachgoers and sailors would be permanently deprived of unobstructed sea views in order to allow present generations to avoid the conservation measures that would save more energy than such wind farms will produce. Destruction of the beauty of our coasts should be a last resort, not a Well-Deserved first effort. We’ve only begun Recognition to explore sources of alternaThanks for the nice write- tive energy and have made up on Bolling Douglas. She only minor efforts at energy
