Women’s Diesel-Engine Workshop rePorts BoatU.S. This workshop is just for women. Women unafraid to get their hands dirty, and wanting to know more about the care and feeding of a marine diesel engine, should sign up now for the Diesel Engine Workshop For Women, April 4-5. The two-day weekend maintenance and repair class is held at the Mack Boring Technical Center in Union, New Jersey, and is sponsored by National Women’s Sailing Association. Participants will learn basic engine service procedures and emergency repairs; two-thirds of the time will be spent working on the engines. Sunday kicks into high gear, focusing on the diesel engine’s lubrication, fuel, cooling, and electrical systems; a take-home manual is included. Space is limited for this class so register as early as possible. Union is just off I-95 and convenient to an Amtrak station and Newark Airport. A special Mack Boring hotel rate is available at the Springfield Holiday Inn. The twoday class is $400. The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway Association is calling upon Congress to create a regional commission to keep the ICW viable. The commission would include representatives from the five south Atlantic states through which the waterway passes, as well as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and members of the commercial navigation and recreational boating communities. AIWA members planned to begin lobbying for the commission this month. Other multi-state waterways operate under regional commissions providing for more effi- cient management, safer navigation, and greater economic benefits. A commission would establish the ICW as a regional transportation artery and provide a mechanism to help fund maintenance dredging. The Atlantic ICW, “the boaters’ Route 66,” runs nearly 1,200 miles along the Eastern Seaboard, providing a protected route from Norfolk, Virginia, to Miami, Florida. The Corps of Engineers is responsible for maintenance dredging but Congress has not appropriated sufficient funding over this past decade. For info, visit www.atlintracoastal.org. — R.L.
