Boat U.S. - March 2009 - (Page 2) atthehelm Practicing What We Preach n this issue we celebrate the nation’s first African-American yacht club and discuss how expanding the boating universe beyond middle-age white males ensures the growth of our pastime. At BoatU.S., we practice what we preach. Our founder, Richard Schwartz, likes to call us the “U.N. of boating.” He’s right. The team serving our members comes from more than 20 countries. Among our officers, we include African Americans, Hispanics, lots of women, and yes, a healthy percentage of white males. We try to portray diversity in our advertising, but I was surprised recently, after we published an advertisement featuring a multi-racial group of boating friends, when a couple of our members wrote to question the relationship between the men, women, and children in the photo and its appropriateness for the pages of BoatU.S. Magazine. Many racial barriers have fallen, but here was a reminder that some still exist. If the boating industry is to survive, we need to welcome all ages, genders and colors, and celebrate our shared love of boats. Richard Schwartz likes to This is our March issue, the time of call us the “U.N. of boating” year when we start to come out of hibernation, do our spring commissioning, and look forward to getting back out on the boat with friends and family. As we begin the process this year, we are mindful that in Washington, the “small-boat threat” is being taken very seriously, especially since the 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India. These attacks were conducted by terrorists arriving in small boats. BoatU.S. believes in the power of people working together, and the empowerment that a neighborhood watch group brings to the grassroots level. Recreational boaters have the “America’s Waterway Watch” program, which encourages participants to report suspicious activity to the Coast Guard. It reminds us that “people are not suspicious, behavior is.” If officials in Mumbai had listened to their local citizens reporting the suspicious behavior of strangers, perhaps some of the tragedy could have been avoided. We’ve been told that America’s Waterway Watch reports have already resulted in a number of potential threats being thwarted at home. This new aspect of boating is unlikely to go away anytime soon. In the coming months we’ll be working with the Coast Guard to support this program and we’ll report back in a future issue. I Chairman & Founder Richard Schwartz PreSidenT & PuBLiSher Nancy S.
