Until recently, asking for a vehicle that could tow like a fullsize pickup, but still get the fuel economy of a sedan seemed a bit ambitious. Fortunately, technology sometimes keeps pace with expectations, as with the new Chevy Silverado Hybrid, the first full-size truck from GM to feature their recently developed twomode, gas-electric hybrid system (see the May ’08 issue for a full review of the Chevy Tahoe Hybrid). Using the same sixliter V8 and twin-electric-motor combination as the full-sized hybrid SUVs in GM’s lineup, the Silverado Hybrid is rated to tow up to 6,100 pounds and gets an EPA-estimated 21 mpg city, 22 highway (2WD models). The 4WD version gets 20 mpg across the board. That city mileage rating is comparable to that of many midsize sedans and even better than a few. But few sedans have a pickup’s utility. Chevy is introducing two versions of the Silverado Hybrid, called HY1 and HY2, based on popular equipment packages on the regular Silverado. Crew-cab versions are available as well. The base MSRP of $38,995 for a 2WD, HY1 model brings it in significantly lower than the base price of the hybrid version of the Tahoe, and doesn’t reflect the $2,200 tax credit available to many buyers of hybrid vehicles.
